Detroit politicians butted heads at breakfast club forum in January over the subject of transit.
According to Detroit Free Press, dissension between Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel became evident over a Q&A and discussion. The disagreement came toward the end of the Jan. 21 Detroit Free Press Breakfast Club Series regarding the matter of regional transit.
Duggan questioned Hackel over the most recent transit initiative, which had been presented in the form of a state House bill. Duggan and a number of other local politicians are pushing for a bill in the state Legislature that would amend the Municipal Partnership Act of 2011.
The proposed amendment would permit the expansion of the region's transit in certain parts. While Macomb County is allowed to opt out of the expansion, it can until it decides to join, however, the bill currently requires more support to pass.
During the dispute, Duggan challenged Hackel's pledge to not stand in the way of the process, pressuring him to testify for the bill.
While Macomb is part of the SMART bus system, a regional form of transit, expansion of the area's regional transit will require a greater push from multiple parties.
