A conservative watchdog group is making an effort to hold Gov. Gretchen Whitmer accountable for allegedly failing to follow her own executive orders when participating in a large outdoor event in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Michigan Rising Action is accusing Whitmer of violating her own executive order when she attended the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, Michigan Capitol Confidential reported. The inauguration took place on Jan. 20 at the Capitol in Washington D.C.
An email memo referred to a Jan. 13 order issued by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services that restricts outdoor gatherings to a maximum of 25 people. Exceptions were listed, however, for voting or official election-related activities.
Whitmer has been critical of rallies held by former President Donald Trump leading to up the November election. “This is a recipe for disaster, and we have seen COVID outbreaks as a result of these rallies," Whitmer said in October, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential. “I’m encouraging Michigan citizens: Don’t attend events like this.”
