Canton Charter Township - MI issued the following announcement on Dec. 16.
Six individuals were recently honored for their extraordinary contributions to the Canton community. This year, the Canton Hall of Fame recognized three individuals based on their long-time and long-lasting contribution to the Canton community. The Community Achiever award recognizes those individuals who brought attention to Canton as a result of a special or outstanding achievement in the past year, and the Community Supporter Award recognizes those individuals or groups who continue to make a regular contribution to the community. This year’s inductees into the Hall of Fame are Dr. Syed Taj, Eva Davis and Tammy Haggerty. The following were recently honored at a private ceremony at Canton’s Summit on the Park Community Center.
Hall of Fame
Dr. Syed Taj served on the Board of Directors of the Canton Community Foundation for six years and currently serves on the board of directors for The Senior Alliance. He spent the last decade as Chairman of United Outstanding Physicians of Southeast Michigan. He is a lifetime member of The Michigan Association of Physicians of Indian Heritage and the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. Dr. Taj was instrumental in bridging the friendship between the Canton Muslim Community of the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs, known as MCWS, and the various cultures in Canton and the surrounding region. He has funded scholarships for graduating PCCS students going into the healthcare field.
Eva Davis, Director of the Canton Public Library, is co-chair of the Canton Coalition for Inclusive Communities, and is also Chair of the coalition’s new subcommittee, the Police Transparency and Guidance Subcommittee. She spearheaded Canton’s Not in our Town program and led the charge for Canton to received Gold Star status through this program. In addition, she volunteers and is active for many causes and organizations such as National Night Out, the Beloved Community, Giving Hope Women’s Giving Circle, and the Canton Community Foundation.
Tammy Haggerty, owner of Jacob Matthews Jewelers, is an active member of Chicks 4 Charity, Giving Hope Women’s Giving Circle, and the Canton and Plymouth Chambers of Commerce. Tammy is extremely passionate about the Wounded Warriors Project. She is currently Local Chapter President and has helped with various other veteran groups, where she has been able to raise over $400,000 in the last few years. She is also a current board member for the Partnership for the Arts and Humanities and the Canton Cares Fund Advisory Committee. She holds many Days of Giving campaigns at her store, offering the proceeds of her store’s sales to different non-profit organizations.
Community Achievers and Supporters Others honored at the Salute to Canton ceremony include Jeff Poplin with a Community Achiever award for his work picking up trash throughout the community, Jennifer Brock with a Community Achiever award for her efforts with the “Feeding the Frontline” initiative during the early days of the pandemic, and Cam Nellett with a Community Supporter award for his many years of service to Canton’s Emergency Food Assistance Program.
