The Michigan Collegiate Press Association recently awarded third place to The Mirror News – HFC’s student-run newspaper – in the online college newspaper category at this year’s annual Better Newspaper Contest.

The Mirror News staff won individual awards in the following categories:

First Place in the Division 3 – Best Writer category to Atika N. for:

* “Americans ‘Need’ You to Smile”

* Review of The Half of It

* “Raya and the Last Dragon: The Disney Movie That Got Away”

Third Place in the Division 3 – Best Writer category to Tyler Stewart for:

* “Something to Sing About During the Pandemic”

* “Rise of the Green Death”

* “Utopi-uhhh”

Third Place in the Division 3 – Column: Review or Blog News category to Atika N. for “Americans ‘Need’ You to Smile.”

Third Place in the Division 3 – Investigative Reporting category to Yasmeen Berry for “COVID-19 Vaccines are Safe: Myth or Fact?”

First Place in the Special Advertising Section category to Carrie Welch for “Engelhardt Social Justice Fellowship: Changing Lives and Making a Difference.”

Honorable Mention in the Multimedia Reporting category to Tyler Stewart for “Henry Ford College’s First Virtual Career Expo.”

“Last year was especially difficult for the student staff of The Mirror News having to go 100 percent virtual and conducting interviews and covering events remotely,” said English professor/faculty advisor Dr. Peter Kim. “For them to have transitioned to online reporting well enough to be awarded third place for online newspaper – a category that included four-year colleges and universities – shows how hard they worked. I am overjoyed that the Michigan Collegiate Press Association recognized the excellence of all The Mirror News staff, particularly the talents and growth of writers like Atika, Tyler, Yasmeen and Carrie. I am so proud of all the students who share their time and talents with The Mirror News.”
