Reminder about Fireworks Ordinance

Fw

As we are entering the summer months and the times of holiday celebrations, we thought now would be a good time to remind everyone of our Fireworks Ordinance.

Below is the most updated version of the Fireworks Ordinance here in Redford Township. Our ordinance mirrors the State of Michigan law.

An ordinance to amend the Charter Township of Redford Code of Ordinances – Chapter 58 - offenses; Article VII. – OFFENSES AGAINST PUBLIC SAFETY; SEC. 58-242. - FIREWORKS

Sec. 58-242. - Fireworks

(a) No person shall ignite, discharge, or use consumer fireworks, as defined by the Michigan Fireworks Safety Act (MCL 28.451 7 et seq.). before 11:00 a.m. as defined in (b) below:

(3) June 29 to July 4 until 11:45 p.m. on each of those days.

(4) July 5, if that date is a Friday or Saturday, until 11:45 p.m.

(c) No person shall ignite, discharge or use consumer fireworks on public property, school property, church property or the property of another person without that organization's or person's express permission to use consumer fireworks on those premises.

(d) No person shall sell consumer fireworks to anyone younger than 18 years of age.

(e) No one shall ignite, discharge, or use consumer fireworks while under the influence of liquor, a controlled substance, or a combination of liquor and a controlled substance, as defined in the Michigan Vehicle Code (1949 PA 300, MCL 257.1d and 257.86).

(f) Any person who violates any provisions of sections (a) through (e) above, shall be guilty of a municipal civil infraction punishable by a civil fine of not more than $1,000.00 for each violation. The remittance of $500.00 of the fine collected goes to the local law enforcement agency responsible for enforcing this ordinance.

(a)

While we may have gotten some rain this past week, the ground is still very dry. Please use fireworks carefully so we don't have any fires.

Be mindful of pets and keep them enclosed indoors while fireworks in your area are being used. Many dogs are fearful of the noise and may run if left outdoors.

Please do not call 911 for violations of the Fireworks Ordinance, instead utilize the non-emergency number, 313-387-2551.

Celebrate safely and have a fantastic holiday!
