The Historical Society of Michigan selects the Dearborn Historical Museum for a 2022 State History Award

The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) has chosen the Dearborn Historical Museum for a special designation in its Educational Programs category for the Pioneer School Program. This designation is among numerous other awards that were presented as part of the Michigan State History Awards program at the end of September.

Dearborn’s Pioneer School Program takes place in the Spring and welcomes about 1,500-second graders to the museum to show students what life was like in Wayne County for settlers during the 1830s. The program includes four interactive stations: butter churning, planting seeds, writing on chalkboards in a one-room schoolhouse, and learning about how life has changed over the years.

“We are honored to have been selected as the recipient of an award for our Pioneer Program by the Historical Society of Michigan,” said Jack Tate, Chief Curator at The Dearborn Historical Museum. “This course is meaningful because it teaches second graders what life was like in the 1830s and how people in Wayne County lived at the time. Being able to take students back in time to experience realistic events is something we are proud to be able to do, and we couldn’t do it without the many volunteers, sponsors, and supporters that help us make this possible.”

The Pioneer School Program was recognized among the other winners across multiple categories at the HSM’s awards event at the 148th annual Michigan History Conference in Albion, Michigan in September.

The Michigan State History Awards is a prestigious program that recognizes achievements in various aspects of Michigan history and is presented by the Historical Society of Michigan every year. The HSM is presenting Awards to both individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the appreciation and understanding of Michigan history at the end of the month.
