In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Dearborn women took the lead in challenging a Michigan law forbidding female bartenders in cities above 50,000

people. Known as the barmaid law, this legislation was initially passed by the Michigan legislature in 1945 and strongly supported by the bartenders union.

Very early, it faced countless legal challenges brought by Dearborn and other Southeast Michigan female bartenders. A lawsuit challenging its legality

made its way to the US Supreme Court in the case Goeseart v. Cleary. While the legality of the legislation was upheld by the court, constant lobbying and

legal pressure applied by its opponents ensured it was never fully enforced. The law was repealed by the Michigan legislature in 1955. If you are curious

about the Supreme Court case Goeseart v. Cleary, more about it could be read here: https://womenwhodared.omeka.net/…/goeseart-v--cleary--the-b…
