DETROIT -- The 2023-24 Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team had 13 Academic All-GLIAC honorees, increasing the total number of recipients to 80 over the last five seasons.
Criteria state the student-athlete must be an active member on the roster at the end of the season and not a freshman or a first-year transfer student.
Named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 were graduate student Trevor Jones (Farmington, Mich.), senior Jeffrey Cottingham, Jr. (Dearborn, Mich. / Edsel Ford), redshirt junior James Violassi (West Bloomfield, Mich. / North Farmington), juniors Joey Dombkowski (Canton, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central), Lucas Harding (Chelsea, Mich. / Salem) and Ryan Kruger (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill), along with sophomore Keanu Gorecki (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Stoney Creek).
Cottingham, Jr. (Exercise & Sport Science - 3.62) earned his second Excellence Team recognition after being on the All-Academic Team in 2021-22. Dombkowski (Nutrition & Food Science - 3.85), Harding (Electrical Engineering - 3.83), Jones (Finance - 3.97), Kruger (Marketing - 3.94) and Violassi (Nutrition and Food Science - 3.90) earned All-Academic Excellence recognition for the second straight season, while Gorecki (Marketing - 3.77) was first-year eligible.
Wayne State had six representatives on the All-Academic Team for having a cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 3.49. This group consisted of redshirt senior Josh Mahaney (Saline, Mich.), senior Marko Vucelic (Wixom, Mich./ Walled Lake Western), junior Clayton Kinnard (Dexter, Mich.), sophomores Muhammed Eliwat (Riverview, Mich.) and Mitchell McMath (Midland, Mich.), along with redshirt freshman Lorenzo Tassinari (Ravenna, Italy).
Vucelic (Mechanical Engineering - 3.32) received his third consecutive Academic All-GLIAC award, while Kinnard (Mechanical Engineering - 3.19) and Mahaney (Mechanical Engineering - 3.13) each garnered their second honor. Eliwat (Computer Science - 3.20), McMath (Biological Sciences - 3.42) and Tassinari (Physical Therapy - 3.02) were recipients in their first season eligible.
