Women's basketball teams honored for academic achievements by WBCA

The 2023-24 Wayne State University women's basketball team has been recognized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) with a "Special Mention" for achieving a team GPA of at least 3.0. The Warriors concluded the academic season with a combined GPA of 3.530.

Wayne State University recorded a term GPA of 3.515 for the Fall 2023 semester and 3.544 for the Winter 2024 semester. Eleven out of seventeen student-athletes earned Warrior Elite status (term GPA of 3.5 or higher) in the Fall, with five achieving a perfect 4.0 term GPA. In the Winter semester, ten players attained Warrior Elite status, with five maintaining a perfect 4.0 term GPA.

Youngstown State University, Ashland University, Williams College, Sterling College, and Folsom Lake College have topped their respective divisions in the WBCA Academic Top 25 Team Honor Rolls for the 2023-24 season, as announced by the WBCA.

The WBCA Academic Top 25 honors NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, and two-year college women's basketball teams across the nation that maintain the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters throughout the season. This marks the 29th year that WBCA has compiled these honor rolls.

Youngstown State led NCAA Division I members with a cumulative team GPA of 3.868 under coach John Barnes. Ashland University secured top academic honors in NCAA Division II with a GPA of 3.875 under coach Kari Pickens. Williams College led NCAA Division III with a GPA of 3.856 under coach Patricia Manning. Sterling College was first in NAIA division with a GPA of 3.831 under coach K.C Bassett, while Folsom Lake College topped two-year colleges with a GPA of 3.564 under coach Ali Mollet.

"The WBCA is pleased to recognize those women's basketball programs that have committed themselves to excellence on the court and in the classroom," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew." The 112 teams we honor this year strive to achieve all-around success and we commend their efforts."

A team's GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points earned by total academic hours attempted by all team members during academic terms spanning semesters or quarters within that season period.
