The Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for Friday, October 25 at The Eastern. Banquet tickets are available through the provided link.
Andreea Mitrache, a four-year women's tennis letterwinner from 2013 to 2018, is among the six inductees. She was a three-time First Team All-GLIAC selection and was named GLIAC Player of the Year in 2015-16.
In her freshman year (2013-14), Mitrache played second and third singles. As a sophomore, she played exclusively at second singles, achieving an 11-0 record in GLIAC matches and a 3-0 record in the GLIAC tournament. She was ranked No. 13 in the final ITA Midwest Regional rankings for singles.
During the 2015-16 season, Mitrache maintained a perfect 12-0 overall singles record at first flight and went 12-2 primarily at second doubles, earning her GLIAC Player of the Year honors. She also received a Fall 2015 GLIAC Commissioner's Award and ended the fall season ranked fifth in the Midwest Region and 33rd nationally in singles.
Mitrache missed both the spring 2016 campaign and the entire academic year of 2016-17 due to injury but returned to play No.1 singles in 2017-18. That season, she compiled a 17-7 singles mark and was ranked sixth in the Midwest Region for singles while going 17-10 in doubles, primarily at second flight.
Her career concluded with a notable record: a total of 64 wins against only eighteen losses in singles matches, including twenty-nine victories at first flight and twenty-six at No.2 singles. In doubles play, she achieved fifty-nine wins against twenty-seven losses across sixty-eight matches at second flight. Her sixty-four career singles wins ranked sixth in school history upon graduation, with her .780 winning percentage ranking fourth among those with at least thirty singles victories.
Wayne State's team had significant success during her tenure on the active roster (78 wins out of ninety-nine matches), including securing their first NCAA Regional title in program history in 2014 along with NCAA Tournament appearances in both 2015 and 2018.
Academically accomplished as well, Mitrache double-majored with Honors degrees in Spanish and Psychology. She made it to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA of over 3.5) all ten semesters she attended Wayne State University—including five terms where she achieved a perfect GPA of 4.0—and earned numerous accolades such as being named an ITA Scholar-Athlete for four years straight; receiving two CoSIDA Academic At-Large All-District First Team honors; being selected four times for GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team; and receiving Dean’s Award from College of Liberal Arts for having highest cumulative GPA among student-athletes within that college during her senior year in 2017.
