Wayne State University's football team faced a challenging start to their GLIAC season, suffering a 22-7 defeat against Michigan Tech University. The game took place on Saturday afternoon at Kearly Stadium in Houghton, Michigan.

In the first quarter, Wayne State's graduate student Griffin Milovanski attempted a 56-yard field goal but missed. A subsequent fumble recovery by the WSU defense set up an opportunity, but a deflected pass led to a turnover. Michigan Tech then missed their own 22-yard field goal attempt.

The second quarter saw Michigan Tech's Alex Fries score on a 25-yard run after a 62-yard drive. Wayne State responded with an impressive six-play, 80-yard drive capped by senior Jeremiah Sterling Jr.'s six-yard touchdown run. However, Michigan Tech quickly regained the lead with Darius Willis catching a 23-yard touchdown pass from Fries.

During the third quarter, Wayne State's defense initially held strong but eventually conceded another touchdown as Willis scored again on a four-yard jet sweep. A blocked field goal attempt by Milovanski further hampered Wayne State's efforts.

In the final quarter, despite some defensive stops and offensive drives, Wayne State could not overcome their deficit. An unfortunate roughing-the-punter penalty and a safety sealed their fate.

Statistically, Michigan Tech outperformed Wayne State with 375 total yards compared to WSU's 261. Both teams had one turnover each, but penalties proved costly for Wayne State with eight infractions totaling 88 yards.

Wayne State quarterback Champion Edwards led his team with 77 rushing yards and completed five passes for 80 yards. On defense, Carl Ware recorded ten tackles. For Michigan Tech, Jake Rueff rushed for 93 yards while Fries threw for two touchdowns and amassed 210 passing yards.

Wayne State will next face Ferris State University at home on October 12th.
