The Wayne State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to compete this weekend. On Friday, divers from both teams will head to Pennsylvania for Clarion's Don Leas Invite at 5 p.m. at Tippin Natatorium. On Saturday, the women's swimming team will host Hillsdale at 11 a.m., while the men's and women's divers will participate in the Clarion Fall Classic at noon.
"We are very excited to host Hillsdale this weekend," said head coach Sean Peters. "They have quite a few talented athletes, and are very well coached. I believe they return two NCAA qualifiers on their program, and are usually one of the higher ranked G-MAC squads. It will be a very good way for our ladies to return to swimming after our competition last month."
Peters also expressed enthusiasm about competing at Clarion, stating, "I am definitely enjoying seeing the progress of our returning divers with John (Martin), Max (Wasiniak) and Wen (Wadsworth-Curcuru), and this will be the first college meet for Alicia (Viaches), Zoe (Wood) and Ella (Murawski). Julio (Osuna) is no stranger to college meets and it will be exciting to see how he does, and all of them, as they Represent the 313!"
As Peters begins his 28th season leading Wayne State, Clarion and Hillsdale's women’s team are guided by experienced coaches as well. The Golden Eagles are under Brehan Kelley, a two-time PSAC Swimming Coach of the Year, entering her seventh season. The Chargers' coach is Kurt Kirner in his 17th year. Jason Trout oversees diving for WSU while Heath Calhoun does so for Clarion; Hillsdale only competes in swimming.
The women's home opener at Matthaei Natatorium starts at 11 a.m., with a live stream available online. Both events on Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at noon from Clarion will also be streamed live.
