Wayne State University's volleyball team has added a new player to its roster. Head coach Tim Koth announced the signing of Kayla Ison, a transfer from Eastern New Mexico University. Ison, originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, joins Wayne State as a junior with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Ison played an integral role at Eastern New Mexico, where she participated in every set during the 2023 season. She started 29 matches and led her team with 521 assists and 4.78 assists per set. Additionally, she tied for the lead in service aces with 25 and contributed 207 digs over the season. Her performance included five double-doubles and several matches with more than 20 assists.
In her previous year, Ison made 18 appearances and compiled 272 assists across 53 sets, leading her team with an average of 5.13 assists per set. She was recognized on the Lone Star Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll both semesters.
During high school at Cibola High School in Albuquerque, Ison was a three-year varsity letterwinner and received Honorable Mention All-District accolades in her final season. She was also part of the Senior All-Academic Team and District All-Academic Team in 2021.
Coach Tim Koth expressed enthusiasm about Ison's addition to the team: "Kayla joining us at semester is really exciting. Having been a two-year starter at her previous school adds a great deal to us at her position. She is a very athletic player and very dedicated to improving her game as well as our team."
Ison is majoring in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry at Wayne State University.
