Wayne State volleyball falls to Michigan Tech in five-set match

Wayne State University's volleyball team faced a tough five-set loss against Michigan Tech on Friday night. This match marked the beginning of their final road trip for the 2023 regular season. The Warriors managed to win the third and fourth sets but ultimately fell in the decisive fifth set.

The match scores were 19-25, 23-25, -23, -24, and 11-15. In the first set, Wayne State led 19-18 before Michigan Tech secured six of the next seven points to take the lead. Despite losing this period, Wayne State displayed strong offensive performance with a .406 hitting percentage.

During the second set, Wayne State tied it at 23-23 before Michigan Tech clinched it with two consecutive points. The Warriors showed resilience in the third set by overcoming a nine-point deficit to gain a two-point lead after a significant 14-3 run.

The fourth set was tightly contested with multiple ties and lead changes. Wayne State concluded this set by scoring three consecutive points, forcing a fifth and deciding set. However, Michigan Tech emerged victorious in the final stanza despite Wayne State's impressive .444 hitting percentage.

Key players for Wayne State included Kayla Giroux with 17 kills and Molly Miller with 16 kills. Kayla Dulgar contributed significantly with 52 assists, marking her third time reaching over 50 assists this season.

"Meg Raabe from Michigan Tech finished with an impressive performance of 32 kills and only seven errors," noted observers.

Wayne State will conclude its regular-season road games against Northern Michigan on Saturday at Vandament Arena.
