The Wayne State University women's tennis team recently hosted its annual WSU Doubles Tournament. Originally scheduled to take place at the WSU Tennis Courts, the event was moved indoors to the Duchene Athletic Facility due to unforeseen circumstances. The tournament saw participation from the Oakland Golden Grizzlies and the Findlay Oilers.
Wayne State's team, known as the Warriors, ended with an overall record of 8-4. Representing the Green and Gold were players Malak Arafat from Alexandria, Egypt; Martyna Szpakowska from Gdansk, Poland; Dessyre Obedencio from Warren, Michigan; Shanice Weekes from London, England; Dea Gorgidze from Tbilisi, Georgia; Anais Ruyssen from Nantes, France; Justine Beaulieu from Montreal, Quebec; and Shantala Uzcategui from Hoyo de La Puerta, Venezuela.
In a notable performance during the tournament, teams consisting of Arafat and Szpakowska as well as Gorgidze and Ruyssen each won two matches. This set them up for a final match against each other. To avoid this inter-squad match-up, Arafat and Szpakowska competed against Best Lee and Martyna Piechowicz of Oakland. Meanwhile, Gorgidze and Ruyssen faced Edie Hammond and Nisa Bulut of Oakland.
The individual results for Wayne State players were as follows: Arafat achieved a 3-0 record alongside Szpakowska who also went 3-0. Gorgidze matched their success with another 3-0 result while Ruyssen completed her matches with a similar 3-0 outcome. Obedencio recorded a 1-2 result along with Weekes who also finished at 1-2. Beaulieu ended her matches at 1-2 as did Uzcategui.
Looking ahead, Wayne State University's women's tennis team is set to return to action on Saturday, February 8 in Indianapolis.
