Wayne State University's men's and women's fencing teams are set to participate in their second team event of the season at Notre Dame's DeCicco Duals. The event will take place on Saturday, January 27, at the Castellan Family Fencing Center. Although the competition spans two days, Wayne State will compete only on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.
The Warriors have been regular participants in this annual event since 2010. Over the past 14 years, the men's team has achieved a balanced record of 39-39, while the women's team has recorded a 40-42 tally. Last year, the men's squad secured victories against Detroit Mercy, Florida, Denison, Lawrence, and Northwestern but faced defeats for the women's team.
"This is the first competition away from Detroit in 2023-24. The whole team is very excited about going to Notre Dame this weekend. We have quite a few new first students on the team, and we are looking forward to seeing them in their first large competition as Warriors," stated Andy Tulleners, Wayne State's head coach.
The competition will feature several other schools. On Saturday, teams from Wayne State, Notre Dame (host), Cleveland State, Lawrence, Denison, Florida, and Northwestern will compete. Sunday's line-up includes host Notre Dame again along with Northwestern (men), Case Western Reserve University of Chicago Indiana Michigan State Michigan Purdue Wisconsin.
Earlier this month on January 14th both fencing squads achieved a clean sweep at Titan Invitational hosted by Detroit Mercy with both securing two wins each; men’s over University of Michigan (16-11) and Titans themselves (19-8).
