The Wayne State University men's and women's fencing teams are set to compete in the Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Championships this weekend. The event will take place at French Field House in Columbus, Ohio, on February 24 and 25.
This marks the first championship for Wayne State under head coach Andy Tulleners. Last year, the men's team achieved a 2-2 record in team competition with two individual medalists. Eyad Marouf from Alexandria, Egypt, secured a first-place finish in the men's sabre. The women's team had a 1-5 record, with Ludovica Mancini from Rome, Lazio, Italy placing sixth in foil.
Ohio State is hosting the championships for 2024. Competing alongside Wayne State and Ohio State are Cleveland State, Lawrence, Detroit Mercy, Denison (women only), and Northwestern (women only). All six programs will participate over both days.
Wayne State's schedule begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday with team events. On Sunday, the women's competition starts at 8 a.m., followed by the men's at 12:30 p.m. Awards will be presented to the top three teams of each gender and the top eight individuals per event. Women's awards are scheduled for around 1:30 p.m., while men's awards conclude the weekend at 5:45 p.m.
In their last outing at the Danosi Open on February 10, Wayne State saw success with five men’s fencers and four women’s fencers finishing in the top three of their events. Notable performances included Zeyad Nofal winning Senior Mixed Sabre and Salma Abdrabou taking first in Senior Women's Epee.
The full schedule includes multiple rounds against conference rivals such as Lawrence and Cleveland State for both men’s and women’s teams on Saturday. Individual competitions will occur on Sunday.
