Wayne state softball splits senior day doubleheader against ferris state

Wayne State University softball team ended its regular season with a split against Ferris State University on Senior Day at Gary L. Bryce Field in Detroit. The Wayne State Warriors, with an overall record of 17-28 and 9-15 in the GLIAC, faced off against Ferris State Bulldogs, who have a record of 24-23 overall and 21-10 in the GLIAC.

In the first game, Ferris State secured a victory with a score of 7-4. Alexis Kozlowski contributed to the Bulldogs' lead with an RBI single in the first inning. Keelin Wheaton extended their advantage to 2-0 in the second inning. Wayne State responded in the bottom of the second inning when Mady Ruczynski hit a triple followed by Logan Forman's RBI single.

Wayne State took a brief lead in the third inning after Kiley Lewandowski hit a two-run triple. However, Ferris State regained control with two unearned runs in the fourth and added three more runs in the fifth inning. Despite Becky Hodder scoring for Wayne State in the sixth inning, Ferris State maintained their lead.

The second game saw Wayne State triumphing over Ferris State with a decisive 9-1 win in five innings. WSU starter Alexis Bonk managed to allow only one run despite walking four batters initially. The Warriors scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by Shelby Miller's high chopper that brought home two runs.

Wayne State further increased their lead to 6-1 following another error by Ferris State and Abby Favela's two-run single made it 8-1. An additional run was scored due to another error by FSU during a fielder's choice play.

Alexis Bonk pitched all five innings for Wayne State, allowing just one run on three hits despite eight walks. For Ferris State, Ashley Webb started but gave up five earned runs within less than two innings.

The Warriors recognized their graduating seniors—Alexis Bonk, Abby Favela, Becky Hodder, Kiley Lewandowski, and Shelby Miller—before game one commenced.

As they await their post-season fate which will be determined on Saturday as other teams complete their games within GLIAC standings: Parkside has two games scheduled at GVSU; Davenport is hosting Purdue Northwest; while Ferris faces Saginaw Valley.
