After a successful home opening weekend, the Wayne State University softball team is set to face Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday and then travel to play Davenport University on Sunday. The Warriors have an overall record of 11-14 and are 3-1 in the GLIAC.
The doubleheader against SVSU will take place at Gary L. Bryce Field, beginning at 1 p.m., while the games at Davenport's Farmers Athletic Complex in Caledonia are also scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. All matches will be available for viewing through the GLIAC's partnership with FloSports.
In their series history, Wayne State has played SVSU 129 times since 1982, holding a slight advantage with a 75-54 record. The Warriors ended an eight-game losing streak against the Cardinals with a victory in their last encounter.
Against Davenport, Wayne State has faced challenges historically, trailing in their all-time series with a record of 9-13. The Panthers have won five of the last six meetings, including three consecutive victories.
Key players for Wayne State include junior Rylie Josephson, freshman Logan Forman, and senior Kiley Lewandowski, who all contributed significantly during the team's recent league play. Sophomore Sasha Buckberger was effective from the mound last weekend, earning two wins in relief appearances.
Saginaw Valley is led by standout performances from freshman Ella Reifschneider and seniors Maddie Campagna and Alyssa Muench. In pitching, Emily Depew has been particularly effective this season.
Davenport recently swept Ferris State and boasts strong performances from players like Becca Daoust and Hayley Kreiger. The Panthers' pitching staff includes freshmen Hailey Whisman and Cecelia Bell as well as graduate student Kelsey Byers.
Following these matchups, Wayne State will face Ferris State in a make-up doubleheader before returning home to play Grand Valley State on April 10th.
