Wayne State University's softball team faced two defeats against Grand Valley State University in a GLIAC doubleheader on Sunday. The matches took place in Allendale, Michigan, with the host team ranked 18th nationally.
In the first game, Grand Valley State secured a 9-1 victory over Wayne State. The Lakers broke a scoreless tie in the second inning with runs driven by Jasmine Mauk and Eliana Eiland. They further extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning. Wayne State's Abby Favela scored their only run after hitting a single and later crossing home plate following Logan Forman's double.
Sydney Long pitched for Wayne State, allowing nine runs (four earned) over 5.2 innings. Ashley Platek was effective for Grand Valley, conceding just one run across six innings.
In the second game of the day, GVSU won narrowly with a 4-3 scoreline. Despite an early lead from Wayne State with contributions from Mady Ruczynski and Kiley Lewandowski, Grand Valley turned the tide in the fifth inning with key hits from Hannah Hollister and Morgan Spicer.
Alexis Bonk pitched for Wayne State, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits through six innings. Nevaeh Ingram started for GVSU before Genesis Eggart closed out the game effectively.
Wayne State will conclude its regular season at home with upcoming games against Cedarville and GLIAC opponents Davenport and Ferris State.
