Wayne State University's cross country and track & field teams have announced their award winners for 2023. The recognition highlights the achievements of various athletes across different categories.
Junior Reagan Justice from Canton, Michigan, was named the women's cross country Most Valuable Player. Justice earned All-Midwest Region accolades with a 20th-place finish at the Regional meet and Second Team All-GLIAC recognition by finishing 13th at the conference meet.
Anna O'Connor, a transfer student from Waterford, Ireland, received the Rookie of the Year award for women's cross country. After joining Wayne State following St. Leo's decision to drop its running programs, she earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors with an 18th-place finish and competed in both NCAA Midwest Regional and Division II National Championship meets.
Ransom Allen from Ithaca, Michigan, was awarded men's cross country MVP for his outstanding performance over multiple years (2019-21-22-23), becoming the first male runner at WSU to achieve three-time All-American status by USTFCCCA. He also received First Team All-GLIAC honors for three consecutive years after initially earning Second Team recognition in 2019.
Seth Pianga from Livonia, Michigan, was named men's cross country Rookie of the Year. Pianga participated in five meets last fall and recorded a season-best 8K time of 25:31.9 during the Lewis Crossover.
In track & field awards, Thailyia Christensen from Flushing, Michigan, was selected as Track MVP. She finished sixth in the 3K at GLIAC Indoor Championships and won the steeplechase event at GLIAC Outdoor Championships with an NCAA Provisional time.
Mikayla Williams from St. Charles, Michigan received Field MVP honors for her performances in triple jump events during both indoor and outdoor championships.
Avery Wilson was recognized as Rookie of the Year by track & field squad after earning USTFCCCA All-Region honors as part of GLIAC Champion relay teams.
The Warrior Award went to Teanna McCuaig who demonstrated perseverance beyond athletic performance. McCuaig transitioned through various sports roles since starting college while maintaining strong academic standing throughout her tenure at Wayne State University.
