Wayne State University's softball team achieved a significant milestone by sweeping a doubleheader against Wisconsin Parkside at Gary L. Bryce Field. The victories marked the team's first conference doubleheader sweep since March 31, 2022.
In the first game, Wayne State secured a 9-7 win. After falling behind in the opening inning, the Warriors responded with five runs in their half of the frame. Becky Hodder and Abby Favela were instrumental in leveling the score, followed by Kiley Lewandowski's single and Logan Forman's sacrifice fly that put Wayne State ahead. Mady Ruczynski extended the lead with her first home run of the season.
The Warriors added to their tally with two more runs in the second inning. Despite Parkside narrowing the gap to 7-5 after three innings, Wayne State maintained its lead through contributions from Shelby Miller and Sydney Long. A late surge by Parkside was thwarted as Alexis Bonk closed out for her first career save.
In pitching efforts, Long allowed six earned runs over three-plus innings before Sasha Buckberger limited Parkside to one unearned run over three innings for her second win of the season.
The nightcap saw Wayne State triumph again with an 11-7 victory in a game featuring numerous hits and errors. The Warriors broke a tie in their half of the fourth inning by scoring six times through contributions from Madison Martinez and Logan Forman.
Buckberger also played a crucial role on defense during this game, securing her second relief win of the day by allowing only three runs over four innings.
The Warriors are scheduled to face Ferris State next on April 2nd for another doubleheader matchup.
