The Wayne State University women's tennis team, ranked 23rd nationally, is set to host its final two regular-season home matches against Grand Valley State and Ferris State. The contests are scheduled for Friday, April 12, and Sunday, April 14, with both starting at 2 p.m.
This marks the second weekend of a four-match home stand for the Warriors. Weather permitting, the matches will be played on the WSU Tennis Courts; otherwise, they will take place indoors at the Duchene Athletic Facility. These matches could determine this season's GLIAC Regular-Season Champion. Last year, Grand Valley State took that title despite Wayne State winning the GLIAC Tournament.
Both Wayne State and Ferris State currently hold a 3-0 record in the GLIAC standings. They are followed by Saginaw Valley State (3-2), Grand Valley State (1-1), Purdue Northwest (1-2), Lake Superior State (1-2), Davenport (1-3), and Michigan Tech (0-3). The top team at season's end will earn the top seed for the conference tournament starting April 26 in Midland, Michigan.
In recent ITA rankings released on April 10, Wayne State was placed 23rd nationally but remains the only GLIAC program in these rankings. Anais Ruyssen ranks 18th in singles nationally while she and Marta Komar rank eighth in doubles.
Wayne State recently improved to a 3-0 GLIAC record with victories over Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech. Justine Beaulieu notably secured a comeback win against Marina Fernandez from Michigan Tech.
Grand Valley State enters Friday's match with an overall record of 8-7 after losing to Ferris State on March 30. Historically, GVSU leads their series against WSU but lost crucial postseason matches last year to Wayne State.
Ferris State has won five consecutive matches after initially struggling this season. They share a league-leading position with Wayne State ahead of their upcoming contest. Historically, WSU has maintained an edge over FSU since September 2002.
Ferris' Morgan Waller and Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer rank as high as No.38 nationally in doubles according to ITA rankings.
