The Wayne State University women's tennis team, ranked 27th nationally, is preparing for the GLIAC Tournament at the Greater Midland Center in Midland, Michigan. The Warriors, who won the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship with an undefeated record of 7-0 in the league, have earned a bye in the first round and will begin their campaign on Saturday in the semifinals against either Saginaw Valley State or Lake Superior State. The match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
The tournament will feature six teams from the eight-team GLIAC: Wayne State (7-0), Ferris State (6-1), Grand Valley State (5-2), Saginaw Valley State (3-4), Lake Superior State (3-4), and Michigan Tech (2-5). A significant victory for Wayne State was their 6-1 win over Ferris State on April 14 in Detroit, which secured them as the top seed. Both Wayne State and Ferris State received byes into the semifinals.
Wayne State aims to secure its third consecutive GLIAC Tournament Championship this Sunday at 10 a.m., prior to men's action scheduled for later that day. The Warriors have won four of the last five tournaments they participated in, excluding 2020 when it was canceled due to COVID-19.
During this season's regular matches, Wayne posted a record of 16 wins against five losses. All losses were against nationally-ranked teams such as Washburn and Indianapolis. Despite these challenges, they managed victories over other ranked teams like Findlay and Columbus State.
In singles play, Martyna Szpakowska led with an impressive record of 17 wins and one loss. Anais Ruyssen and Malak Arafat each secured 14 victories primarily playing at top positions. Other notable performances include Shanice Weekes with a record of 12 wins out of her matches played mostly at third flight.
In doubles competition, Ruyssen and Marta Komar achieved a record of 13 wins while Szpakowska paired with Arafat achieved a commendable record together.
According to recent NCAA Regional Rankings released on April 24th, Wayne stands third behind Indianapolis and Tiffin among Midwest Region programs eligible for NCAA Midwest Regionals hosting rights.
