Wayne State University's women's tennis team, ranked 16th nationally, achieved a 6-1 victory over Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday. The match took place at the Duchene Athletic Facility and marked the Warriors' fourth consecutive win.
In doubles play, Wayne State won two out of three matches to secure the first point. Shanice Weekes and Dea Gorgidze triumphed at the No. 2 spot with a 6-3 win. However, Michigan Tech's Chiara Heinz and Emily Rose defeated Marta Komar and Justine Beaulieu 6-4. Malak Arafat and Martyna Szpakowska clinched a tie-breaking victory at the first flight with a score of 7-6 (7-2).
The Warriors dominated in singles, winning five out of six contests. Gorgidze delivered an impressive performance at the fourth flight with set victories of 6-1 and 6-2 against Rose. Komar won her match in straight sets against McDonnell, while Szpakowska secured her win at the No. 3 position over Bella Bigari.
Arafat played at the first flight for only the fourth time in her collegiate career and won against Cojocaru with scores of 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Beaulieu overcame Fernandez in a super tiebreaker after losing her first set.
Michigan Tech's sole point came from Heinz's victory over Weekes at the fifth flight.
Wayne State is scheduled to continue its home stand on April 12 against Grand Valley State.
