Wayne State University's women's tennis team began their conference play with a 5-2 win against Saginaw Valley State at the Greater Midland Tennis Center. This victory marked their first GLIAC match of the season, improving their overall record to 10-5. The center will also host the upcoming GLIAC Tournament starting April 26.
The doubles matches saw Wayne State's Anais Ruyssen and Marta Komar defeat Adriana Barrio and Tara Erler with a score of 6-2. Shanice Weekes and Dea Gorgidze won against Johanna Michahelles and Lydia Liong, while Malak Arafat and Martyna Szpakowska triumphed over Amelia Dickson and Elizabeth Stuart.
In singles play, Wayne State secured four out of six matches. Ruyssen achieved victories in straight sets against Barrio. Arafat overcame Erler after dropping one set, while Szpakowska delivered a flawless performance against Calli Sokolowski. Weekes defeated Liong with scores of 6-1 and 6-0.
Komar won one set but ultimately lost to Michahelles, while Gorgidze claimed an initial set victory before falling to Dickson in subsequent sets.
Wayne State is scheduled to face Northwood for their final non-conference match on April 2 at noon at the same venue.
