Wayne State University's women's golf team is set to commence its 2024 spring schedule at the Emerald Coast Collegiate in Destin, Florida. The tournament, hosted by the University of Missouri-St. Louis, will take place from March 10 to March 12 at Baytowne Golf Club.
"I know we are all really excited to get down to Florida and compete again," said Larry Hamilton, who is in his third year as head coach. "It's been a really good and productive winter, and we want to get back on the golf course and play. This event boosts a strong field and that's good for us. We want to see and play against the best teams from around the country and this event gives us that opportunity."
The competition will feature 17 programs including Wayne State's Warriors and host Tritons. Other participating teams include Oklahoma Baptist, Drury, Truman State, Arkansas Tech, Mississippi College, Central Missouri, Flagler, UT Permian Basin, Central Oklahoma, St. Mary's (TX), Glenville State, Illinois-Springfield, Arkansas-Fort Smith, West Florida, and Ashland.
Wayne State's lineup consists of senior Beca Vestman from Madrid; sophomore Maisarah Hezri from Sungai Petani; graduate student Inja Fric from Ljubljana; sophomore Sabel Imesch from Grosse Pointe Farms; and redshirt junior Logan Potts from Norton Shores.
Additionally on the roster are sophomore Orianna Bylsma from Montague and freshman Clarita Laffitte from Montevideo who will compete individually without contributing to the team score.
This tournament marks the first of four regular-season events for Wayne State this spring. The team will also participate in Lander's Lady Bearcat Invitational (March 25-26), Bowling Green's Dolores Black Falcon Invitational (April 6-7), and Walsh's Cavalier Classic (April 15-16).
In their fall season campaign which included five events overall they secured a first-place finish at Davenport’s Panther Invitational marking their first team title since 2018 - only fifth in program history with Vestman claiming her inaugural individual title after defeating DU’s Lauren Gervais on a second playoff hole.
For Wayne State University it will be their debut appearance at UMSL’s Emerald Coast Collegiate tournament.
