The Wayne State University women's golf team is set to compete in the GLIAC Championships at Stonehedge North Golf Club in Augusta, Michigan. The competition will begin with 18 holes on Friday and another 18 on Saturday. Teams that rank among the top four after these rounds will advance to the Match Play Semifinals, scheduled for later on Saturday. The finals are slated for Sunday.
"We are always excited to play in the GLIAC Championship," said head coach Larry Hamilton. "We have played very well on this course in the past and are looking forward to the opportunity presented to us this year."
This season marks the fifth time that the Medal Match Play Championship format is being used, excluding 2020 when it was not held due to COVID-19. Wayne State has qualified for this stage in each of its previous four occurrences but has yet to secure a victory. In past tournaments, they were defeated by Grand Valley State in both 2019 and 2021, lost against Northwood in 2022, and were beaten by Saginaw Valley State last spring.
The lineup for Wayne State includes Beca Vestman from Madrid, Spain; Maisarah Hezri from Sungai Petani, Malaysia; Sabel Imesch from Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan; Clarita Laffitte from Montevideo, Uruguay; and Logan Potts from Norton Shores, Michigan.
The tournament field consists of several teams ranked regionally and nationally: Grand Valley State (3/22), Wayne State (4/49), Ferris State (7/63), Davenport (13/79), Saginaw Valley State (16/100), Northern Michigan (NR/118), Purdue Northwest (NR/157), Lake Superior State (NR/161), and Parkside.
