The Wayne State University women's tennis team, ranked No. 16, secured a decisive victory over Lake Superior State with a 7-0 shutout on Friday afternoon. The match took place at the Duchene Athletic Facility in Detroit and marked the second of seven league games for Wayne State this season.
With this win, Wayne State extended its winning streak to three matches. This recent success includes another 7-0 victory against Oakland and a 5-2 triumph at Saginaw Valley State last week.
In doubles play, Wayne State swept all matches to gain an early advantage. Anais Ruyssen and Justine Beaulieu claimed a 6-0 win at the third flight against Julia Fraile Raton and Martina Oviedo. Malak Arafat and Martyna Szpakowska defeated Tayla Brasier and Trinity Ly with a score of 6-3 in their first match as the top-ranked duo in Division II. Shanice Weekes and Dea Gorgidze added another win with a 6-3 score over Maddie Whip and Valentina Parodi at the No. 2 spot.
Wayne State dominated singles matches as well, conceding only 15 game points across all contests. Szpakowska won her singles match against Ly with consecutive 6-0 scores at the No. 3 position. Ruyssen achieved a victory of 6-1, 6-0 over Brasier at the first flight, while Arafat overcame Whip with scores of 6-4 and then blanked her opponent in the second set.
Gorgidze secured two sets of victories both ending in scores of 6-2 against Parodi at the fourth flight, clinching the overall win for Wayne State. Weekes defeated Fraile Raton with scores of 6-1 each set, while Beaulieu finished off Oviedo with scores of 6-0 and later wrapping up with a close set at 6-4.
Wayne State will face Michigan Tech next as part of their four-match home stand on Saturday following their men's team's match against Michigan Tech Huskies.
