The Wayne State University men's tennis team, ranked 22nd nationally, is set to begin its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) schedule this weekend. The Warriors will host Lake Superior State on Friday, April 5, and Michigan Tech on Saturday, April 6. Both matches are scheduled for 10 a.m., with the venue depending on weather conditions; either indoors at the Duchene Athletic Facility or outdoors at the newly renovated WSU Tennis Courts.
Wayne State's conference schedule includes matches against six other league schools that sponsor men's tennis: Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Purdue Northwest, and Davenport. The Warriors aim to defend their GLIAC Tournament title from last year.
The team's season record stands at 8-8 after three matches were designated as exhibitions and excluded from official standings. Notably, Wayne State maintains a perfect home record of 6-0. Singles players Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey have achieved over ten victories each this season.
In recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings released on April 3, Wayne State improved to 22nd nationally. Daniel Grey is ranked eighth in singles play while Cedric Drenth holds the 12th position. Together they rank third in doubles.
Wayne State recently faced Tiffin University in an official match on March 26, securing a 4-0 victory. Daniel Grey was named GLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his performances during this period.
Lake Superior State enters Friday's match with a record of 5-3 this season. Wayne State has dominated past encounters with LSSU, winning the last 17 meetings since April 2003.
Michigan Tech will face Wayne State on Saturday with a current record of 3-11. The Warriors have won their last twelve consecutive matches against MTU since March 2013.
