The Wayne State University men's tennis team, ranked 22nd nationally, secured a narrow 4-3 victory over Grand Valley State, ranked 36th, on Friday. The match took place at the Duchene Athletic Facility in Detroit. This win improved Wayne State's record to 11-8 overall and maintained their perfect conference record at 3-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
Wayne State's success in doubles play set the tone for the match. Luke Laws and Dom Spicer achieved a 6-3 win against Chimo Minguez and Jorge Ruiz. Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory over Sean Miller and Victor Lopes. Denali Kitayama and Benjamin Hill completed the sweep with a close 7-6 (9-7) win.
In singles matches, both teams won three matches each. Drenth defeated Miller with scores of 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. Spicer added another point for Wayne State by winning his match against Lucas Gonzalez with scores of 6-2 and 7-6 (7-4). Despite Grand Valley earning points through victories from Lopes, Ruiz, and Minguez in other singles matches, it was Grey who sealed the overall win for Wayne State by defeating Denys Zamaraiev with scores of 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Coach Bryan Morrow expressed satisfaction with his team's performance: "Great win today against a really good team in the GLIAC... I am particularly happy with the way we started the match." He also praised individual performances: "Daniel Grey made it through a tough match... Cedric Drenth had a little trouble... but he pulled that one out as well."
Looking ahead, Wayne State will face Ferris State on Sunday in Detroit. Both teams are tied at the top of their conference standings.
