The Wayne State University women's golf team concluded its participation in the 2024 GLIAC Championships by securing fifth place among eight teams. The event took place at Stonehedge North Golf Club in Augusta, Michigan. After two rounds of stroke play, the team posted a total score of 634 (+58), which was insufficient to advance to match play.
Grand Valley State, Davenport, Saginaw Valley State, and Ferris State surpassed Wayne State and progressed to the next phase of the competition. Grand Valley State and Davenport emerged victorious in their respective match play contests and are set to compete for the team GLIAC Championship on Sunday.
Wayne State had previously qualified for match play in all four past instances when it was held.
Two members of the Wayne State team achieved top-10 finishes individually. Beca Vestman from Madrid, Spain, and Sabel Imesch from Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, both tied for eighth place in the individual standings.
The individual performances were as follows: Beca Vestman scored 153 (+9) with rounds of 78 and 75; Sabel Imesch also scored 153 (+9) with rounds of 75 and 78; Maisarah Hezri from Sungai Petani, Kedah, Malaysia finished 25th with a score of 162 (+18); Clarita Laffitte from Montevideo, Uruguay tied for 28th with a score of 166 (+22); Logan Potts from Norton Shores, Michigan placed 32nd with a score of 169 (+25).
The final team standings were led by Grand Valley State with a score of 604 (+28), followed by Davenport at 616 (+40), Saginaw Valley State at 620 (+44), Ferris State at 622 (+46), Wayne State at 634 (+58), Northern Michigan at 647 (+71), Lake Superior State at 674 (+98), and Purdue Northwest at 679 (+103). Parkside did not feature in the rankings as they participated with only three individuals.
Looking ahead, Wayne State will wait to learn if they qualify for the NCAA Regionals scheduled from May 6 to May 8 at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.
