The Wayne State University men's tennis team, ranked 22nd nationally, is set to conclude its regular-season home schedule with matches against Grand Valley State and Ferris State. The matches are scheduled for Friday, April 12, and Sunday, April 14, both at 10 a.m. The Warriors hope to play outdoors on the WSU Tennis Courts for the first time this season, though inclement weather could move the contests indoors to the Duchene Athletic Facility.
Wayne State is currently undefeated in GLIAC play with a 2-0 record. Their upcoming opponents are also significant in the conference standings. Ferris State leads with a 3-0 record, while Wayne State follows closely behind. Grand Valley State holds a 2-1 record within the league.
These matches will help determine this season's GLIAC Regular-Season Champion. Last year, Ferris State claimed that title despite Wayne State winning the GLIAC Tournament. Historically, since 2009, the regular-season winner and tournament winner have been separate entities.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has recently released its latest Division II rankings. Wayne State remains ranked at No. 22 in the nation. Individually, Daniel Grey holds an eighth-place ranking nationally in singles, while Cedric Drenth dropped slightly from 12th to 13th place.
Wayne State's recent performances include victories over Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech as they commenced their GLIAC action with solid wins of 6-1 and 7-0 respectively. Dom Spicer was recognized as the GLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week for his outstanding performance during these matches.
Grand Valley State enters Friday's match ranked 36th nationally with an overall record of 11-5 this season. The Lakers recently had their five-match winning streak broken by Ferris State. Meanwhile, Ferris State is currently ranked No. 28 and has won seven consecutive matches leading into Sunday's game against Wayne State.
