The Wayne State University men's golf team is set to commence the spring segment of its 2023-24 schedule. The team will participate in Davis and Elkins' Battle at Brunswick, held at Brunswick Golf Club in Calabash, North Carolina, on Friday and Saturday. During the fall season, the Warriors participated in seven tournaments, securing top 10 finishes in six events, including four second-place results.
Head coach Mike Horn expressed optimism about the upcoming competition. "We are looking to get off to a hot start this spring," Horn stated. He highlighted the team's extensive winter training sessions and outdoor practice in Michigan as preparation for overcoming initial rustiness often encountered at the start of spring competitions. Horn acknowledged the challenge posed by Brunswick Plantation's course and emphasized readiness despite northern schools typically facing adjustments on Bermuda greens.
The lineup for Wayne State features Mat Hawryluk from Chatham, Ontario; Josh DiCarlo from Amherstburg, Ontario; Max Leppelmeier from Wauseon, Ohio; and Ian Smith from Canton, Michigan. Tyler Hurtubise from Essex, Ontario, and Adam Burghardt from New Baltimore, Michigan will compete for the fifth spot on Thursday. The remaining golfer will play individually alongside Shawn Sehra from Windsor, Ontario; Josh Lahner from Roselle, Illinois; and Tommy Gebeck from Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan.
Last year at this event, Wayne State achieved a second-place finish among 14 teams. Six out of nine participants from that competition will return this year: DiCarlo, Hawryluk, Leppelmeier, Hurtubise, Smith and Burghardt. In last year's tournament performance for WSU DiCarlo tied-for-second place while Hawryluk tied-for-fourth and Leppelmeier tied-for-eighth.
