The Wayne State University men's golf team achieved a significant victory at the Findlay Spring Invitational, marking their second win in the last three tournaments. The team posted a three-round score of 853 (-11, 281-291-281), surpassing Missouri S&T by ten strokes to secure first place.
Josh DiCarlo from Amherstburg, Ontario, secured runner-up honors with a five-under 211 (67-75-69). This was DiCarlo's best finish since winning the BrownGolf Intercollegiate on March 12, 2022.
Head coach Mike Horn expressed his pride in the team's performance. "I'm so proud of the boys," he said. "This is the only time I could ever remember us winning a tournament wire to wire with a field this big. We led after the first hole and never relinquished the advantage through 54 holes."
Horn also congratulated Adam Burghardt and Josh DiCarlo for their top-five finishes and acknowledged Mat Hawryluk and Ian Smith for their strong play. He praised Missouri S&T for hosting a great event and expressed optimism about using this victory as momentum for future competitions.
In a competitive field of 18 schools from the Midwest Region, Wayne State finished undefeated with a record of 17-0. This achievement marks their first season with two tournament titles since 2021-22 and their first spring campaign with two wins since 2017-18. The Warriors have placed at least third in six out of ten events this season.
Adam Burghardt tied for third place with a career-best three-under 213 (71-71-71), following his tie-for-sixth finish at the SVSU Spring Invite last week. The top five included Connor Benjamin and Jeppe Thybo from Missouri S&T, Kyle Buzaki from Walsh as individual medalist, alongside Burghardt and DiCarlo.
Mat Hawryluk and Ian Smith both finished in a four-way tie-for-seventh at one under par. Their scores were bolstered by rounds of 72-72-71 and 71-74-70 respectively.
Max Leppelmeier completed Wayne State's group performance by tying for 36th place with a seven-over score of 223 (72-74-77).
The Warriors are set to host their next event, the Motor City Shakedown, on Monday, April 1 at TPC Michigan in Dearborn.
