The Wayne State University men's golf team finished second in the nine-team field at the GLIAC Championships, securing a spot in the Medal Match Play portion for the second consecutive season. Competing at Stoatin Brae Golf Club, Wayne State faced Ferris State in the semifinals but was defeated 3-2.
"After we fought back so nicely today, it was very disappointing to lose in the first round of match play 3-2," said head coach Mike Horn. "We were up in a number of matches and just couldn't close it out. I'm really proud of our guys, how they responded today and how we battled during the match portion. It just stinks to come up one shot short. This is a huge lesson that every shot matters and it's not about the score, it's about the context of the team."
In stroke play, Wayne State moved from fourth to second place with a two-day score of 583 (+15). Three players ranked among the top ten: Mat Hawryluk placed seventh, while Adam Burghardt and Josh DiCarlo tied for eighth. Ian Smith and Max Leppelmeier also performed well, finishing within the top 25.
During their matchup against Ferris State, Smith won by seven strokes and Hawryluk by three. However, Leppelmeier lost by two strokes, DiCarlo by two, and Burghardt by one.
Wayne State's ranking as No. 3 in the Midwest will determine its next steps on April 26 when NCAA.com announces further developments.
