The Wayne State University men's tennis team, ranked 22nd nationally, secured a decisive victory against Lake Superior State with a score of 6-1. This match, held at the Duchene Athletic Facility, marked the opening of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) for Wayne State.
In doubles play, Wayne State dominated by winning all three matches to secure the opening point. The third-ranked pair in Division II, Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey from Germany, overcame an early deficit to win their match 6-1. Luke Laws and Dom Spicer followed with a 6-1 victory at the second position. At the No. 3 spot, Denali Kitayama and Benjamin Hill won their match 6-2.
Wayne State nearly swept the singles matches as well. Daniel Grey quickly finished his match with a score of 6-0, 6-1. Dom Spicer added another point with set wins of 6-2 and 6-3. Denali Kitayama came from behind to win his match after losing the first set. Cedric Drenth clinched the overall victory for Wayne State with his three-set win at the second flight.
Emil Mikkelsen made his season debut memorable by winning convincingly at the No. 6 position. However, Benjamin Hill was defeated in straight sets at No. 5.
Wayne State will continue its home stretch by facing Michigan Tech on Saturday.
