Wayne State University's men's tennis team concluded its regular season with a 6-1 victory over Davenport at the MVP SportsPlex in Grand Rapids. The No. 25-ranked Warriors, who now hold a 13-9 overall record and a 5-1 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), will enter the upcoming GLIAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed.
In doubles play, Wayne State swept all three matches. Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey secured a win against Subash Paramasivam and Jan Stolin with a score of 6-1 at the first flight. Emil Mikkelsen and Joe Steele also achieved a 6-1 victory over Max Dion and Marius Pion at the third position. Luke Laws and Dom Spicer won their match against Jose Brenes and Carlos Henriquez with a close score of 7-5 at the second spot.
In singles competition, Wayne State won five out of six matches. Drenth, ranked No. 10 in Division II, defeated Paramasivam after a tie-breaker in the first set followed by an easier second set victory. Davenport's Carlos Henriquez was successful against Spicer at the third position, marking Davenport's only point.
Denali Kitayama triumphed over Pion with scores of 6-2 and 6-4 at the fourth flight. Grey clinched his match against Stolin after three sets, completing an undefeated GLIAC singles campaign this season. Mikkelsen beat Brenes in straight sets at the fifth position, while Benjamin Hill delivered back-to-back 6-0 wins against Dion at the sixth flight.
Head Coach Bryan Morrow commented on the team's performance: "Great win today! It was probably the best energy and the most relaxed doubles that we have played all year...We are looking forward to the conference tournament next weekend!"
Wayne State will compete next in the GLIAC Tournament held in Midland, Michigan as they prepare for their semifinal match on April 27th.
