The Wayne State University men's tennis team, ranked 18th nationally, is set to compete in the GLIAC Tournament this weekend at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Michigan. The Warriors earned a bye for the first round and will face either Grand Valley State or Davenport in the semifinals on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Having finished second behind Ferris State in the regular-season standings, Wayne State aims to contend for the GLIAC Tournament Championship on Sunday at 3 p.m., following women's championship matches scheduled for earlier that day.
The tournament features six of seven GLIAC teams: Ferris State (6-0), Wayne State (5-1), Grand Valley State (4-2), Lake Superior State (3-3), Purdue Northwest (2-4), and Davenport (1-5). Both Ferris State and Wayne State received byes into the semifinals. If Wayne State faces Ferris State again on Sunday, it would be a rematch of last year's championship, where Wayne State secured a 4-0 victory.
Wayne State's season record stands at 13-9, with all losses against nationally ranked opponents. Notable victories include wins over Division I Toledo and #15 Washburn. Within the Midwest Region, they hold a strong 10-3 record and went 9-1 in home matches.
Cedric Drenth led the Warriors with an 18-2 singles record, while Daniel Grey recorded a 16-5 mark. Both players achieved perfect records within the GLIAC. In doubles, Grey and Drenth posted a 15-7 record.
In NCAA regional rankings released on April 24, Wayne State is third in the Midwest Region behind Indianapolis and Ferris State. The top two programs will host part of the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
According to ITA rankings updated on April 24, Wayne State moved up to 18th nationally from their previous position of 25th. Individually, Daniel Grey ranks fifth in singles, while Cedric Drenth is placed at fourteenth. The duo remains second in doubles rankings.
