Wayne State football team begins spring practice ahead of April Spring Game

The Wayne State University football team has commenced its spring practice sessions at Tom Adams Field. The Warriors will engage in a series of 15 practices, held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., concluding on April 10th. Additionally, Saturday practices are scheduled for March 23rd, March 30th, and April 6th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Spring Game is planned for April 13th at 2 p.m., preceded by the Football Futures Event.

In the previous season, Wayne State faced one of the most challenging schedules in Division II football. Their ten NCAA opponents collectively achieved a .636 winning percentage, marking it as the toughest schedule in DII. "Wayne State and its fellow GLIAC members played some of the toughest schedules in all of Division II football last fall," according to their records. Despite this challenge, four of Wayne State's eight losses were against teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Academically, Wayne State led the GLIAC with eight Academic All-District honorees and had five student-athletes advance to the Academic All-American ballot. These athletes include Shavez Hawkins Jr., Kane Quinlan, Drake Reid, Griffin Milovanski, Jeremy Taras, John Rayba, Aidan Tweedy, and Gus Taylor.

The team roster consists of youthful players with limited experience; only 32 out of 76 returning players have earned a letter at Wayne State. The offensive line shows some stability with eight players combining for a total of 57 career starts across various positions.

Of the current roster of 105 players—including true freshmen—12 are redshirt seniors and there are varying numbers across other class years down to redshirt freshmen. The breakdown includes different roles such as wide receivers, tight ends, offensive linemen on offense; defensive ends and tackles among others on defense; and three special teams returnees.

The incoming recruits consist of various positions including wide receivers, offensive linemen, quarterbacks among others contributing to both offensive and defensive lines.
