The Wayne State University men's tennis team is set to compete in a series of matches in Lima, Ohio. The team, currently ranked 24th nationally, will face Northwestern Ohio and Case Western Reserve on March 28 and March 29, respectively.
Northwestern Ohio is ranked second in the NAIA by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as of March 14. The Racers have achieved a strong record this season with only one loss out of 13 matches. They are led by coach Jeff Brown, with assistance from Andrea Arango-Brown, Evan Neuman, and Vaune Glorioso.
Case Western Reserve, a prominent Division III team ranked fourth nationally, holds a record of 14-4. The Spartans are aiming to defend their NCAA Championship title from the previous year. Their coaching staff includes Todd Wojtkowski as head coach and assistants Wade Heerboth, CJ Krimbill, and Saumil Jhaveri.
Wayne State's Warriors hold an even record of eight wins and eight losses for the season. These upcoming matches will serve as exhibitions for them before they begin their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on April 5 against Lake Superior State.
In recent ITA rankings released on Wednesday afternoon, Wayne State was placed 24th in Division II tennis rankings. Daniel Grey and Cedric Drenth were highlighted as top singles players for Wayne State at ninth and eleventh place respectively.
The Warriors recently secured victories over Findlay and Tiffin in Midwest Region matchups which helped break a losing streak experienced during their Spring Break trip to Florida.
As Wayne State prepares for these contests against high-caliber opponents like Northwestern Ohio and Case Western Reserve, they aim to strengthen their performance ahead of upcoming GLIAC tournaments scheduled to start later in April.
