Wayne State University's men's tennis team, ranked 18th nationally, secured a 4-2 victory over the 37th-ranked Grand Valley State in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals. The match took place on Saturday at the Greater Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Michigan. This win propels Wayne State into the championship match scheduled for Sunday.
The Warriors had previously earned a bye in the first round of the tournament and entered as the second seed after finishing second in regular season standings behind Ferris State. Wayne State will face Ferris State again, seeking to avenge their earlier 4-3 loss on April 14. Ferris State reached the finals by defeating Purdue Northwest with a decisive 4-0 scoreline.
In doubles action, Wayne State clinched the opening point by winning two completed matches. Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey triumphed over Sean Miller and Freddy Cossio at the first flight, while Joe Steele and Emil Mikkelsen defeated Stephen Claassen and Lawrence Ivanov at No. 3 position.
In singles play, Wayne State won three out of five completed matches. Daniel Grey faced Denys Zamaraiev and emerged victorious with set scores of 7-6 (7-3) and 6-2 at the first flight. At No. 2 position, Cedric Drenth defeated Sean Miller with scores of 6-4 and 6-0. Dom Spicer also secured a win against Lucas Gonzalez at No. 3 spot with back-to-back set wins of 6-2.
Denali Kitayama played against Victor Lopes at No. 4 position but lost after winning his first set. Emil Mikkelsen was defeated by Chimo Minguez at No. 6 flight, marking GVSU's second point in the match.
Benjamin Hill's contest against Jorge Ruiz went unfinished; Hill won his opening set but no further results were recorded.
Wayne State aims to claim its third consecutive tournament title when they meet Ferris State again in Sunday's championship match scheduled for 3 p.m., which will be held at Greater Midland Tennis Center.
