Wayne State leads after first day at Battle at Brunswick

The Wayne State University men's golf team has taken the lead after the first day of competition at the Battle at Brunswick, hosted by Davis & Elkins. The tournament, held in Calabash, North Carolina, marks Wayne State's initial outing for the spring season.

Leading the individual standings is Mat Hawryluk from Chatham, Ontario, who shot a two-under-par 70. "The boys battled today, especially when the back nine got messy, but we persevered," commented head coach Mike Horn. He praised his team for overcoming challenges and noted solid performances from several players.

Newcomer Shawn Sehra made a notable debut with the team. Horn extended congratulations to Hawryluk for leading and acknowledged contributions from Max Leppelmeier, Ian Smith, Josh DiCarlo, Tyler Hurtubise, Adam Burghardt, Josh Lahner, and Tommy Gebeck.

In individual standings among 60 competitors:

- Mat Hawryluk is in first place with a score of 70.

- Tied for third are Max Leppelmeier and Ian Smith with scores of 72.

- Tied for fifth are Josh DiCarlo and Tyler Hurtubise both scoring 73.

- Also tied for fifth as an individual competitor is Josh Lahner with a score of 73.

- Tied for 22nd are Shawn Sehra and Adam Burghardt each scoring 77.

- Tommy Gebeck holds a tie at 52nd with a score of 87.

Team standings show Wayne State leading with a score of 287 (-1), followed by Emory & Henry at 301 (+13) and North Greenville at 302 (+14). Other teams include Davis & Elkins and Virginia State tied at fourth place.

Coach Horn expressed optimism about continuing their strong performance into the next day: "We hope to continue play tomorrow and wash away our mistakes from today. It was a great opening day by the Warriors."
