Wayne State University's men's basketball team secured a win against Grand Valley State on Thursday night, ending a four-game losing streak. The Warriors, with an overall record of 9-12 and 3-9 in the GLIAC, triumphed over the Lakers, who share the same overall record but hold a 6-5 conference standing. The final score was 73-66 at the Fieldhouse.
In the first half, Grand Valley State started strong by scoring the initial five points. Rob Lee, Jr., from Flint, Michigan, responded for Wayne State with his game-high and personal-best of 17 points. Despite this effort, Grand Valley maintained their lead throughout most of the first half, closing it with a four-point advantage at 33-29.
The second half saw Grand Valley extend their lead to nine points early on. However, Wayne State countered with eight consecutive points. The game saw its third tie at 56-56 with just over four minutes remaining. Wayne State then took control and outscored Grand Valley by seven points until the end.
Wayne State's performance included tying their season high of 19 assists and recording only four turnovers. They improved their shooting percentage significantly in the second half compared to the first. In contrast, Grand Valley's shooting declined in the latter part of the game.
Rob Lee led all scorers with his personal best of 17 points during his first career start. Other notable contributions came from Carmelo Harris with 12 points and Ray Williams Jr., who added another 11 points to secure victory for Wayne State.
For Grand Valley State, Ethan Alderink led his team with 16 points and was also their top rebounder with seven boards.
Wayne State is set to face Davenport next on Saturday at home.
