The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its latest weekly tennis awards, recognizing Wayne State University men's tennis graduate student Dom Spicer for his performance. Spicer, from London, England, achieved a 2-0 record in both singles and doubles against Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech during the previous week.
In a match against the Lakers, Spicer secured a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Driss Sedrati at the third flight. He also teamed up with Luke Laws from Sunderland, England, to win a doubles match 6-4 against Sedrati and Jordi Fraile Raton at the No. 2 position.
Spicer continued his strong performance against the Huskies by defeating Leon Sell with set wins of 6-4 and 6-3 at the No. 3 singles spot. He and Laws also won their doubles match against Eli Pinnoo and Landon Coates with a score of 6-2.
These victories improved Spicer's season record to 11-5 in doubles and an even 7-7 in singles contests. This marks his fifth GLIAC Player of the Week award in his collegiate career, with previous honors including three in 2022 when he was named GLIAC Player of the Year.
Wayne State athletes have received this recognition six times this season. Daniel Grey from Wiesbaden, Germany has been honored three times, while Cedric Drenth from Sulzbach, Germany has been named twice.
Spicer and his teammates will continue their league play at home on Friday, April 12 against Grand Valley State followed by a match on Sunday, April 14 against Ferris State. These will be Wayne State's final regular-season home matches as they aim to maintain an undefeated home record for the year.
