Wayne State offense dominates defense in annual spring football match

On a breezy Saturday afternoon at Tom Adams Field, the Wayne State offense triumphed over the Warrior defense with a score of 106-76 in their annual spring football game.

The offensive lineup featured three rushing touchdowns by redshirt junior D'Marco Singleton, redshirt senior Jeremiah Sterling, and redshirt freshman XaVior Tyus. Tyus made a significant play with a 63-yard rush after recovering a mishandled snap, concluding his performance with three carries for 71 yards. Sterling contributed with 15 rushing attempts for 52 yards, while Singleton added six carries for 20 yards.

In the passing department, all three quarterbacks took snaps from the shotgun formation. Redshirt freshman Justin Cox completed 12 out of 15 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. His classmate Cane Mack finished seven out of 13 passes for 67 yards and one touchdown. Redshirt freshman Nigell Johnson managed two completions on three attempts for a total of 11 yards.

Singleton also led in receiving with six catches totaling 42 yards. Touchdown receptions were secured by redshirt senior wide receiver Myles McKatherine, redshirt sophomore tight end Nick Ostas, and redshirt junior wideout Manny Harris. Redshirt junior tight end John Rayba achieved first downs on each of his three receptions amounting to 51 yards. Notable plays included catches by redshirt freshman tight end Jobe Benschoter (29 yards) and redshirt junior wide receiver Pierce Muthui-Edwards (36 yards).

Defensively, the Warriors had a standout moment when redshirt freshman safety Derrick Wallace Jr. forced a fumble that was returned for an 80-yard touchdown by redshirt freshman cornerback Kejuan Houston.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Davon Dallas-Jackson recorded three solo tackles resulting in sacks. Houston also contributed three solo tackles and broke up one pass besides his fumble return effort. Wallace made four stops including one sack following his forced fumble action. Additionally, defensive efforts saw contributions from players like Justin Hart who tallied six tackles; CJ Gordon who marked four solo tackles; Brayden Vredeveld who registered four tackles plus a pass break-up; Josiah Buford and Devon Brown both making five stops each.

On special teams duty was kicker Jeremy Taras who successfully made all PAT attempts along with two field goals from distances of 47 and 58 yards but missed from longer ranges of 60 and 62 yards respectively. Kicker Griffin Nowak succeeded on one PAT attempt but failed on his sole field goal try from beyond forty-seven meters.

With this game marking the conclusion of their spring practice sessions today marks an important point ahead as team members are set to report back come Saturday August tenth leading into preparations towards facing off against Tiffin opening season fixture scheduled Thursday September fifth later this year.
