Wayne State men's basketball defeats Davenport for second straight win

The Wayne State University men's basketball team secured a second consecutive victory with an 84-70 win over Davenport University on Saturday. The game took place at the Fieldhouse, improving Wayne State's record to 10-12 overall and 4-9 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). Davenport now stands at 9-13 overall and 4-8 in the GLIAC.

In the first half, Davenport briefly led at 4-2 before Wayne State embarked on a decisive run, scoring 23 of the next 27 points. This surge put them ahead by a significant margin of 25-8. Jordan Briggs contributed six points during this period. Despite efforts from Davenport's Marcedus Leech, Jr., who reduced the deficit slightly, Wayne State maintained control and entered halftime with a lead of 43-31.

Davenport made several attempts to close the gap in the second half, narrowing it to eight points on four occasions. However, Ray Williams, Jr.'s jumper restored Wayne State's double-digit advantage at 58-48. The Panthers continued to challenge but were unable to draw closer than six points as Wayne State finished strong with a final score of 84-70.

Wayne State dominated in rebounding, securing a total of 43 boards compared to Davenport's 24. This included an impressive performance on offensive rebounds with an advantage of 11-3, resulting in ten second-chance points for Wayne State. The Warriors also outshot their opponents with a field goal percentage of 50.9% compared to Davenport's 43.3%.

Rob Lee, Jr. led Wayne State with a personal best of 21 points on efficient shooting, including three successful three-pointers and four free throws out of seven attempts. Other notable contributions came from Carmelo Harris with 19 points and Colin Golson, Jr., who added twelve points.

For Davenport, four players each scored twelve points: Marcedus Leech, Jovan Tucker, Jeff Carrier, and Raishaun Brown. Tucker nearly achieved a double-double and recorded five steals during the game.

Wayne State is set to face Lake Superior State next Thursday at Sault Ste. Marie.
