Wayne State University's men's basketball team secured a spot in the GLIAC tournament with a thrilling 75-74 victory over Saginaw Valley State University. The game concluded dramatically as Carmelo Harris scored the winning basket just as time expired.
The first half saw Wayne State taking an early lead, with contributions from Tamario Adley and Ray Williams, Jr., among others. Despite leading by as much as 16 points, the Warriors' advantage was cut to one point by halftime.
In the second half, both teams exchanged leads multiple times. Tre Garrett's lay-up gave SVSU its first lead since early in the game. However, Wayne State managed to regain control with crucial plays from Rob Lee, Jr., and Colin Golson, Jr.
As the final seconds ticked away, Kevonne Taylor's dunk put SVSU ahead briefly before Harris's coast-to-coast drive sealed the win for Wayne State.
Statistically, Wayne State shot 54 percent from the field compared to SVSU's 41 percent. The Warriors also had a slight edge in rebounds and free throw accuracy.
Rob Lee led Wayne State with 22 points while Tre Garrett led SVSU with a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds.
Wayne State will now face Lake Superior State in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday.
