Wayne State University's football team faced a challenging game against Grand Valley State University, ending with a 66-10 loss at Tom Adams Field. This match marked the conclusion of Wayne State's home games for the 2023 season.
The first quarter saw Wayne State achieve an initial first down through freshman quarterback Justin Cox's pass to senior wide receiver Darrin King II. However, Grand Valley State quickly responded with Cade Peterson's touchdown pass to Gavin Cossou and followed up with another score after blocking a Warrior punt. By the end of the first quarter, Grand Valley had secured a significant lead.
In the second quarter, Wayne State struggled to convert plays into points while Grand Valley extended their advantage with additional touchdowns from Darrell Johnson and Avery Moore. Despite holding more possession time, Wayne State was unable to capitalize on opportunities.
The third quarter continued in favor of Grand Valley as they scored two more touchdowns, including one from Kyle Nott’s punt return. Wayne State managed a field goal by Griffin Milovanksi but could not narrow the gap significantly.
During the fourth quarter, Khalil Eichelberger added another touchdown for Grand Valley. Although Wayne State scored their only touchdown through Max Nicklin’s reception from Eli McLean, it was not enough to challenge their opponents' dominance.
Statistically, Grand Valley outperformed Wayne State in total offense with 515 yards compared to 269. Despite having more possession time, Wayne State converted fewer third downs than their rivals.
Wayne State's Ke'Waun Farnum led his team in rushing yards while Te'Avion Warren contributed both on ground and special teams. For Grand Valley, Tariq Reid excelled in rushing yards and Peterson demonstrated efficiency in passing.
Wayne State will conclude its season against Ferris State next Saturday at Top Taggart Field.
