The Wayne State University men's basketball team achieved a significant milestone by winning its first GLIAC Tournament game since 2012. The victory came with an 87-78 win against Lake Superior State University on Wednesday evening in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. This marked the team's first opening round GLIAC Tournament win on the road or at a neutral site since February 25, 1999.
In the first half of the game, Wayne State maintained control for most of the period, leading for over 18 minutes compared to just 27 seconds for Lake Superior State. The Lakers' Kingsley Perkins scored early, but Wayne State's Colin Golson quickly tied and then took the lead with a three-pointer. By halftime, Wayne State was ahead 35-31.
The second half saw Wayne State extend its lead further. They started strong by outscoring Lake Superior in the initial minutes and continued to build their advantage throughout the half. Carmelo Harris contributed significantly with his fourth three-pointer, helping to establish a game-high lead of 15 points for Wayne State.
Wayne State excelled in shooting accuracy, achieving 51 percent from the floor and an impressive 60 percent from beyond the arc. Their free throw performance was also notable, hitting 96 percent from the line.
Rob Lee Jr., a freshman from Flint, Michigan, led Wayne State with a career-high of 23 points and perfect free throw shooting. Colin Golson added another strong performance with 22 points while Carmelo Harris finished with four triples contributing to his total of 16 points.
Lake Superior's effort included all five starters scoring in double figures, led by Devin Womack with a team-high of 17 points.
Looking ahead, Wayne State will face Ferris State in Marquette during the GLIAC Semifinals scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m.
